Microsoft Antitrust Appeal Dismissed by EU Court

This is an interesting development in the case of European Union vs Microsoft. The European Union’s Court of First Instance rejected the appeal made by the Microsoft to the landmark antitrust ruling in 2004 and upheld the $613 millions / EUR 497 millions fine.

The court also stated that EU’s antitrust commission ruled correctly against Microsoft when it said the software maker leveraged its dominant position in the market for PC operating systems into work group server operating systems and media players.

What will happen to Google Inc, Apple Inc and other US based technology companies which now rapidly extend their business into Europe soon?

What do you think? Is it the EU Comission to stop Microsoft monopoly based on antitrust law is good for the consumer at large?

Microsoft supporter seems to have different opinion.

“This is an unfortunate day for consumers,” said Lars Liebeler, a lawyer for CompTIA, an association of information technology companies that supports Microsoft.

“The EU will now be operating under a different legal rule,” he told The Associated Press. “This causes great confusion to the marketplace.”
